Almagul Menlibayeva
Almagul Menlibayeva was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1969, and she
graduated from the Art and Theatre University in Almaty in 1992. A key
theme in all her work is a juxtaposition of modernity and tradition, and she
plays with traditional images and concepts by placing them in new and
contemporary contexts. Shamanism is an important theme for Almagul
Menlibayeva, and much of the powerful and vivid imagery of her work is
inspired by the shamanistic traditions of Central Asia. She masters
several techniques, and never being afraid to experiment with new
approaches, she is at ease with both the traditional techniques of visual
arts and such contemporary forms of expression as installation and video
art.
In the 2000s, Almagul Menlibayeva has gained wide international
recognition, and her works have been on display, among other museums
and festivals, in the Venice Biennale, the Pompidou Centre of Modern Art
in Paris, and the Sydney Biennale of Contemporary Art. At the moment,
Almagul Menlibayeva lives and works in Berlin.
